I know everyone’s favourite scene in Disney’s Mulan is Mulan chopping her hair off to some epic soundtrack and feminists and film studies students everywhere would have a grand time analysing this as hair as a symbol of feminity etc

But you know in imperial Chinese guys don’t cut their hair (don’t believe the pretty manhuas/animes), they’d have hair as long as the girls, just bunned up. In fact, having your hair chopped off if you were a guy was a punishment (symbolic punishment meant to levy public embarrassment). So to a Chinese who for some reason is taking the premise and setting of the movie seriously, that scene make a no sense historically or contextually.

If anyone needs a reminder that Disney’s Mulan is a western retelling of a Chinese folk tale for western consumption (or even western feminist consumption), here’s another one!!

So I’ve been working on a pitch for an Intellectual Property Creators Challenge while being super broke. I hope I can finally pursue my creator-owned project I have been putting on hold forever.

The theme requires the content to be children-friendly so I had to tone down a lot of what was originally intended for mature readers. To begin with, those college kids are now in junior high school.

I’ve been posting the progress a lot because I’ve had it with all the NDAs that I could not share. Will probably post the rest of the pages with dialogues when all 3 are done.

    Please pray for my selection!
